چکیده

Abstract. We investigate the error implied by the use of the Zel’dovich approximation to set up the initial conditions at a finite redshift zi in numerical simulations. Using a steepest-descent method developed in a previous work (Valageas (2002a)) we derive the probability distribution P(δR) of the density contrast in the quasi-linear regime. This also provides its dependence on the redshift zi at which the simulation is started. Thus, we find that the discrepancy with the exact pdf (defined by the limit zi → ∞) is negligible after the scale factor has grown by a factor a/ai >∼ 5, for scales which were initially within the linear regime with σi <∼ 0.1. This shows that the use of the Zel’dovich approximation to implement the initial conditions is sufficient for practical purposes since these are not very severe constraints.

Transients from Initial Conditions in Cosmological Simulations

We study the impact of setting initial conditions in numerical simulations using the standard procedure based on the Zel’dovich approximation (ZA). As it is well known from perturbation theory, ZA initial conditions have incorrect second and higher-order growth and therefore excite long-lived transients in the evolution of the statistical properties of density and velocity fields. We also study...

Transients from Initial Conditions: A Perturbative Analysis

The standard procedure to generate initial conditions in numerical simulations of structure formation is to use the Zel’dovich approximation (ZA). Although the ZA correctly reproduces the linear growing modes of density and velocity perturbations, non-linear growth is inaccurately represented, particularly for velocity perturbations because of the ZA failure to conserve momentum. This implies t...

Nonlinear Evolution of the Genus Statistics with Zel’dovich Approximation

Evolution of genus density is calculated from Gaussian initial conditions using Zel’dovich approximation. A new approach is introduced which formulates the desired quantity in a rotationally invariant manner. It is shown that normalized genus density does not depend on the initial spectral shape but is a function of the fluctuation amplitude only.

Second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory initial conditions for resimulations

We describe and test a new method for creating initial conditions for cosmological Nbody dark matter simulations based on second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (2lpt). The method can be applied to multi-mass particle distributions making it suitable for creating resimulation, or ‘zoom’ initial conditions. By testing against an analytic solution we show that the method works well for a sph...

Transients from initial conditions based on Lagrangian perturbation theory in N-body simulations

We explore the initial conditions for cosmological N-body simulations suitable for calculating the higher-order cumulants of the density field. In general, the initial conditions based on the perturbation theory (PT) provide incorrect growth in next leading order, which are called transients. Before transients have been completely suppressed compared with the dominant growing mode, we can not r...
